Drawing 1:

My first drawing was all about making sense of the space and different values. I initially seriously misunderstood the assignment and thought that we needed to use all of the materials in one drawing, so I ended up using everything in my kit (8B, Ebony, 6B, and 3B pencils, vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, soft charcoal, Conte crayon, and Sharpie). I really didn’t understand the values at this point, so it’s not my proudest work; I think it’s got lots of room for improvement. However, I really enjoyed the textures on this drawing, especially the sheet and on the wood. If I were to redraw it now, I think it’d turn out better now that I understand the values a bit more.

Drawing 2:

I chose to do a positive/negative drawing for my second one, and I’ll admit, it came out really well and ended up being one of my favorites! I sketched the objects with a 3B pencil, outlined them in Ebony (layered with Sharpie) and then covered the background in charcoal pencil. I think I really wanted to get a better grasp of the shapes in this drawing; I had a lot of trouble with the angles and shading in the first one, and I believe my shapes look much better. I also kept my details on the objects to a minimum to maximize my understanding of these shapes. I would like to experiment with thicker lines on the details if I were to redraw this.

Drawing 3:

I think here is where I really started understanding the shapes and the structures. I think my understanding of shapes came together really well, and I used my materials to really establish the shadows and shapes.

Drawing 4:

By far my proudest work, my fourth drawing is a culmination of all aspects, and an experiment in shadows and textures. By now I think I really understood the shapes and values, and I am extremely proud of how this turned out.
